Lady Huskers Hang Tough With State Ranked Foe, Finish Fourth Up North

Along with the boys squad the Lady Huskers took their show on the road again up north to the Hamilton Tournament. In game one, the ladies would face the East Buchanan Lady Bulldogs, and captured an opening night win advancing to the right side of the bracket.

In the first quarter Chloe Tyler hit a freebie at the line, and Lillian Joyner scored next. Tyler scored again and Lillian Joyner hit a three pointer and the huskers led 10-6 after one. Claudia Kouril got a follow basket for 13-9, and Stoner hit a three for 18-11 from the corner in the 2nd quarter. East Buchanan answered with a three later eventually going up 21-18. Tyler hit again and the quarter ended 21-10 EBHS up.

In the 3rd Stoner hit a oater, Kouril hit a shot, Tyler scored making it 28-24, and Frerking got a follow to go and Q3 ended 30-27.

In the 4th Stoner hit again from deep, Tyler got to the line for one, then hit again for 38-29 before Frerking added a layup at 2:40. Tyler calmly hit two free throws, and the coaching staff saved a possession with a timely timeout as East Buchanan was attempting a come- back with frenetic defense at the 1:46 mark. Later Joyner got an and one to go, Frerking also hit two free throws under a minute to go as the Huskers held on down the stretch, winning 49-34. Scoring: Stoner 10, Joyner 9, Kouril 8, Tyler 14, Frerking 8.

In the semifinal HHS played perhaps one of their best games of the season against top seeded Savannah. The Lady Savages entered at 15-1, with mostly blow out wins along the way. Stoner would be hot from three point range in this one helping the Huskers keep pace all night.

Tyler opened the scoring at 2-0, Kouril scored, and Stoner dialed up her first three of the contest at the 3:05 mark for 10-7, HHS down. Frerking free throws and another Stoner 3 made it 16-12 after one, with the Lady Savs up.

Tyler closed the Huskers to within 2 in the 2nd, at 1614, however Savannah went on a run, making the count 27-17 at the half.

Stoner hit a three after Joyners bucket for 27-22, and the Lady Savage coaching staff took a timeout to talk things over at 6:41 in Q3. Frerking got a layup at 2:45 for 32-24 SHS, Stoner got a spinner underneath to fall for 34-26, and the frame ended soon after.

Kouril drove the lane and scored to open the 4th, Stoner got a steal and a layup, and then hit yet another three ball for 36-33 at 4:47. Makenna Riekhof made it a one point game with a follow, 36-35 now and another SHS timeout was called. The Huskers took a one point lead on the state ranked squad on a Tyler basket (37-36) but the Lady Savs 39-37. The Huskers took their own timeout to discuss things under a minute to go. Savannah hung tough on defense taking away Husker weapons, and holding on for the win 41-37. Scoring: Stoner 16, Joyner 2, Kouril 4, Tyler 8, Riekhof, Frerking 5.

The Lady Huskers were short handed in the third place game sporting a limited quantity of players suited up on the bench. Lathrop struck first then Kouril answered at 6 minutes. Tyler used a pump fake to get a bucket and 4-4 score, then Tyler made it 8-6 later, Penney up. Frerking made it 10-9, and Tyler got the Huskers up 11-10 under 3 to play. Kouril drove from the top of the key for 13-13 before Jacie Kassanavoid (a Virginia Tech Softball signee) hit a three for 16-13 Lathrop, and Q1 ended with a Frerking bucket at the buzzer for 16-15.

Q2 saw Stoner hit a three to open up the quarter for an 18-16 Husker lead, Stoner dropped in two freebies for 26-24 at the 2:15 mark, then at 1:20 Stoner hit a deep three, Tyler hit from the elbow, and the half ended tied at 31.

Joyner got a bucket running the floor with an assist from Frerking, in the third. Frerking drove and used the glass, for 35-33 Huskers. At 3:25 Stoner hit another deep three for 38 all, Miller added two freebies, Kassanavoid hit her 18th point, and later Lathrop went ahead by 5. Frerking added 4 points to close the frame 45-44.

In the fourth Lathrop surged ahead 51-44, Stoner got a layup o a turnover by the Lady Mules, but Kassanavoid hit a three for 5446. Tyler hit at 2:45 for 59-53 at 2:46, Frerking drove baseline for 59-56, Joyner was at the stripe delivering both for 61-57 at 1:33, Lathrop extended to 63-57 and with thirty seconds left perhaps the Huskers were looking for a screen to get free for a deep shot however nothing materialized and Lathrop came away with the W on a defensive stand. The loss drops the record to 9 and 11 overall. Scoring: Stoner 15, Miller 3, Joyner 4, Kouril 8, Frerking 17, Tyler 10. Kassanavoid led all scorers with 30.
