Lady Huskers Split Conference Games with Lexington and Carrollton
The Lady Huskers took on a pair of conference foes last week, the first one being another meeting with the Lexington Minutewomen. The Blue and Gold won the previous meeting on the ‘Women’s floor in front of a packed gymnasium back in the middle of January, by three points, 48-45.
The Huskers got a three ball from Ada Stoner early in the quarter, as well as one from Addison Frerking for an 8-0 lead. Lillian Joyner knocked down a shot off an assist from Chloe Tyler, Stoner hit another three at 4 to go, then got a steal and score for a 13-2 lead and nice start for HHS. Stoner then added a third Q1 three at the 1:50 mark, and the first frame ended 20-6 Huskers up. Stoner with 11 points.
Tyler made it 22-10 in Q2, Claudia Kouril dropped in one of two at the stripe, Frerking played swiper no swiping and scored, Kouril added a layup and halftime arrived, with HHS up 3016.
The ‘Women weren’t going away just yet and came out of the break scoring the first six points, behind a three ball and a conventional three point play. Lexington closed to within six under 2 to go in Q3, however Stoner got cookies and scored and Kouril got a tie up on a hustle play giving the ball back to HHS as the third quarter ended 36-28.
Tyler hit from three land again to open the 4th for HHS after a Lexington basket, then later hit for 41-32. Kouril scored four straight for 47-38, Frerking hit at the 2:40 mark and the Lady Huskers cruised to a final score of 51-42. Scoring: Stoner 15, Tyler 16, Frerking 9, Joyner 2, Kouril 9.
Next up was another rematch with a conference opponent, across the Big Muddy north, against the mighty Carrollton Lady Trojans. CHS won big last time in Higginsville, focusing on defending the two leading Husker scorers, Stoner and Tyler.
The Trojans went up 4-0 before Tyler knocked down a wide open mid-ranger off the press. Frerking hit a shot for 6-4, but CHS sprung forward 12-6 near three to play in Q1 and the quarter ended 16-6.
Frerking added a three to start the second quarter, and Claudia Kouril hit from down low later for 22-14 mid quarter. At the three minute mark Frerking hit from deep again for 24-18, now down just six points, and then Stoner hit from the attack line in volleyball for a deep three of her own and just like that the Huskers were back in business 2624. Carrollton forged ahead though, dropping in a bucket at the buzzer for a 30-25 halftime advantage.
The Trojans showed why they are in contention for another conference title by extending their lead to 49-33 after three quarters.
Zaylin Strickland was in for the Huskers in the third, and started Q4 off with a bank-is-open extended hours three pointer from the top of the key, however HHS was not able to mount much more offense in the 4th and fell 63-38.
Carrollton outshot HHS 55% to 25% on field goal percentage, but most of the other stats were comparable, including free throw (50% to 46%) and three pointer percentages 35% to 32%. The loss dropped the record to 12 and 12 overall, and 4 and 4 in the MRVCE.
This week will see the Lady Huskers take on Richmond and Holden again.
Carrollton scoring recap to come.
