Husker Boys Season Ends in District Final

It was postseason time for the Huskers of Higginsville last week on the road at host site Lone Jack.

LC-C1 would enter as the top seed with University Academy as the two seed. First off though, was a third meeting with the Lexington Minutemen on Thursday. LHS was the 4 seed and looking for an upset to extend their season. Kadin Aversman scored first, Lucas Bums hit down low, and Parson Stoner made it a quick 7-1 lead with a three.

Lexington’s Cael Lichte nailed his first three of the night as Q1 closed 9-4. Stoner hit another three, Aversman hit from the elbow, but LHS was coming to life and Lichte’s next three made it 16-11. Some turnovers in Q2 had LHS in it 18-14, but Stoner’s three and Aversman’s and one conversion saw the frame end 24-16.

The third quarter saw the Minutemen really gain ground, closing to within one point heading into the 4th. Zayden Fisher hit a three at 3:52 for a 42-36 Husker advantage but LHS forced the game to it’s first overtime, with a Zach Melvin three, and a deep three from Lichte with thirty seconds left.

Lichte opened O.T. with a three shortly after a Husker turnover, but later Clay Aversman and K. Aversman scored, and C. Aversman got a big steal but the game then went into double O.T.

Lexington scored first again, with Kash Cole getting a bucket, but C. Aversman scored, then got a steal and two freebies to fall. Both teams missed some free throws, and at the end Brock Page connected down low for a 54-52 thrilling victory.

Finally it was time for the district championship bout on Saturday against a spirited University Academy team for the championship of District 14. Fisher scored back door for a 8-7 Husker lead early, and later hit a three for 11-12 Huskers down one. Q1 ended by the same score.

Bums hit down low, Fisher had a nice ball fake and dish to Page for a tally, and then the Huskers were oddly called for back to back three second violations. Page later scored off an inbounds play, but halftime came at 27 for U.A. and 19 for the Huskers.

Bums made it 31-23, at the 3:14 mark, and Page got a steal and score later for 31-25. Bums got to the stripe hitting both then scored again after a Gryphons goal tending call. U.A. got a three point play though and Q3 ended 38-29.

K. Aversman got a rip and steal and trip to the stripe for two, making both to start Q4 for 38-31, but U.A. answered back. Aversman then got a dipsy do nice take to fall in the lane, and Page scored to make it 41-35. The Gryphons connected on a three to steal a bit of momentum, but Fisher scored on a drive, and then a Husker three attempt made a full circle rotation on the rim almost before not dropping in, down six with less than a minute. U.A. would take a hard fought 6 point win home, 47-41.

The loss ends a fine season at 21-7 overall and sends off several seniors who have made their mark on Husker Basketball, and also as 2025-26 MRVCE Champions.
