Why do we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day?

Every year on March 17, people across the United States and around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green.

But why green? St. Patrick’s Day honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. While early depictions of Saint Patrick often showed him wearing blue, green eventually became the color most associated with Ireland. The country is often called the ‘Emerald Isle’ because of its lush green landscape, and green has long been a symbol of Irish pride and heritage.

Another reason for wearing green comes from Irish folklore. According to legend, wearing green makes a person invisible to leprechauns- mischievous fairy creatures said to pinch anyone they can see. While it’s all in good fun, the tradition of pinching those who forget to wear green has become a playful part of the holiday.

Green is also tied to the shamrock, a three-leaf clover that Saint Patrick is said to have used to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. Today, shamrocks, green clothing, and festive decorations are all part of the celebration.

Whether it’s a bright green shirt, a simple ribbon, or a festive hat, wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day is a lighthearted way for people of all backgrounds to join in the celebration.
