Mural project gearing up
The Lexington Community Betterment Association is beginning a project to enhance the entrance to Lexington that many people take when entering from 24 Highway and South Business Highway 13.
The project is to paint a “Welcome to Lexington” mural on the concrete wall at the northwest corner of Roncelli Road and South Business Highway 13 (close to the Subway restaurant).
The mural will be a community project where various members of the community can design and paint the inside of one of each of the letters in the phrase “Welcome to Lexington” with something related to Lexington.
Local artist Mike Elder will paint the outlines of the letters and the background color as the starting point. LCBA will provide the paints and painting supplies.
Any local organization, group, or individuals can apply to design and paint one of the letters with something related to Lexington. No compensation will be made for painting. This will be a totally volunteer project. It is preferred that an applicant submit a description and drawing of their concept. If you would like to apply and have a concept, but need assistance in drawing, you can mark that on the application. If selected, the committee can have a local artist help you with your drawing.
Printed application forms will be available at the Lexington Public Library beginning March 1. Completed forms can be returned to the library by the due date of Friday, April 17. People can also apply online prior to April 17 at google docs by scanning the QR code at the end of this article.
After all applications have been made, the LCBA Mural Committee will select who will be doing each letter. The painting is scheduled to be done during late May and early June of this year, with a dedication around July 4th as we celebrate Lexington and the United States 250th anniversary.
