Tuesday Night Thriller: LHS Baseball Opens Home Season with Two Wins

Last Tuesday night’s home opener at LHS delivered everything fans could hope for, strong pitching, timely hitting and a pair of victories. The varsity squad edged their opponents 5-3 while the JV team pulled out a 3-2 win in the last inning, giving the program a confidence-boosting start to the season.

The highlight of the evening came on the varsity mound, where senior Trey Perez turned in a commanding performance. Perez worked seven innings and allowed zero earned runs, mixing a steady fastball with a deceptive breaking pitch to keep hitters off balance. His efficiency and composure helped set the tone for the rest of the staff and gave the offense room to operate.

Coach Whitt praised Perez’s outing and emphasized the broader lessons the game offered. “The boys got a very important win. Trey pitched a great game, going seven innings and allowing zero earned runs,” Whitt said “We still must capitalize on opponents’ mistakes and be more disciplined at the plate. We have to avoid mental errors that lead to runs and pay attention to all the small details. Overall, it’s always nice to get a win, especially when it’s your first game of the year.”

The JV team matched the varsity’s energy with a determined 3-2 win. The younger squad showed signs of growth from preseason, executing fundamentals in the field and showing poise at the plate. Coaches noted that the JV players’ approach at the plate helped turn tight situations into run-producing opportunities. Despite the wins, Coach Whitt was realistic about the work ahead. “It’s still very early in the season, so it’s hard to tell,” he said. “In baseball you have to throw strikes, limit errors, swing at strikes and run the bases with knowledge and savvy. It will all depend on how much we mature and how our pitching performs. Either way, the boys will work hard to put themselves in a position to win as many games as possible.”

LHS returned to the diamond this week with a road game at Richmond on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
