Lexington Mayoral Candidates Forum

1. State the elected office you are seeking.
I am seeking re-election as Mayor of Lexington, Missouri.
2. Give us a background of your family, your education and your history in the area.
Lexington has been an important part of my life for many years. I first lived here from 1985 to 1994 and returned in 2011 because I believe deeply in this community and its future.
I am a proud father of two daughters, Lauren Mittendorf and Kaitlin Hawes, and grandfather to six wonderful granddaughters. While they live outside of Lexington, their future—along with that of all children and families—motivates my commitment to helping build strong communities.
My professional background is in education, leadership, and community service. I hold a Master of Science in Education from Pittsburg State University, a Post-Graduate Teaching Certification from Emporia State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science with an emphasis in State and Local Government from the College of Emporia.
Over my career I have served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator, including leadership roles at Wentworth Military Academy and College and in professional athletics. These roles required budget management, team leadership, and strategic planning—skills that translate directly to municipal leadership.
Today, I am honored to serve the citizens of Lexington as Mayor, and I remain committed to helping our city grow while preserving what makes Lexington special.
3. State your reasons for running for this office.
I am running for re-election because Lexington is at an important moment, and continued steady leadership is essential to maintaining the progress we have made.
During my time as mayor, we have worked to strengthen infrastructure, improve communication with residents, support our police, fire, and EMS departments, and position Lexington for responsible economic growth. We have also focused on building stronger regional partnerships to ensure Lexington has a strong voice in decisions that affect our community.
There is still important work ahead, and I believe continuity in leadership helps ensure that the progress we have made continues moving forward.
4. State your qualifications for this office.
My qualifications come from a combination of leadership experience, public service, and community involvement.
As Mayor, I work with the City Council, city staff, and regional partners to address infrastructure needs, improve emergency preparedness, strengthen communication with residents, and advocate for Lexington at the regional and state level.
Before serving in city government, my career included leadership roles in education and athletics. As Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach at Wentworth Military Academy, I managed budgets, oversaw major programs, and served on the President’s Council. I also worked in athletic marketing and administration at Valdosta State University and in professional sports organizations.
These experiences required accountability, collaboration, and strategic planning— qualities that are essential for effective municipal leadership.
5. What are your priorities and goals for the city of Lexington?
My priorities focus on strengthening Lexington while protecting the character and history that make our community unique. We must continue improving essential infrastructure such as water and wastewater systems, roads and bridges, utilities, and high-speed internet, ensuring these systems remain safe and reliable for the long term.
Another priority is encouraging responsible growth, including expanding quality housing opportunities and supporting local businesses. Strong economic development will help create jobs, strengthen our tax base, and support long-term stability for the city.
Public safety is also a top priority. I will continue working to ensure our police, fire, and EMS departments have the resources, training, and support they need to serve residents effectively.
Finally, I will continue strengthening relationships with neighboring communities, county leaders, and state partners so Lexington can pursue opportunities that benefit our residents.
Lexington has a proud history, and with thoughtful leadership and community collaboration, I believe we can continue building a strong and prosperous future for our city.
