Letter to the Editor

I am writing to share some excellent news regarding the safety and future of our community. On March 12, Lexington was officially designated as a 2026 Missouri Blue Shield Community by the Department of Public Safety.

This is the second year in a row our city has earned this distinction, and it isn’t just a symbolic pat on the back.

To qualify, Lexington had to prove to the state that we are “extraordinary” in our commitment to public safety. This includes our local government’s dedication to funding the police, our success in recruiting and keeping high-quality officers, and our active community policing partnerships.

What does this mean for the average resident? Beyond the prestige, it brings home a $50,000 state grant. Chief Josh Coen and the Lexington Police Department can use these funds for critical needs like updated body cameras, better radio systems to talk with neighboring agencies, and advanced officer training.

In an era where public safety is a top priority for families and small businesses, this designation sends a clear message: Lexington is a safe, proactive, and well-supported place to call home. We should all take a moment to thank Chief Coen and the men and women of the Lexington Police Department for the hard work that went into securing this honor for a second year. It’s a win for every one of us.
