Tigers pull away from Minutemen in late innings

In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, the Wellington-Napoleon Tigers Boys Baseball Team pulled away in the final two innings, and defeated the Lexington Minutemen 17 to 5 last Wednesday in Lexington.

The Minutemen got off to a great start in the first inning, as Hunter Meyer, Braxton Emerson and Trey Perez got three straight singles, followed by a triple by Isac Huffman, and Lexington had a quick 3-0 lead after one, and still held that lead after two innings.

Wellington scored twice in the top of the third, with the big blow being an RBI double by Taten Kolkmeyer, and the Lexington lead was 3-2. The Tigers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, as they benefitted from 3 walks and an error, to take a 5-3 advantage, as Wyatt Miller drove in a run with the only hit of the inning. The Minutemen then got a run when Alex Kraft singled home Kale Sander who had walked, to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4, at the end of the fourth inning.

Wellington scored twice in the fifth on a single by Phoenix Blystone, but Lexington responded with a run on a single by Trystan Hurshman to make it 7-5. However, the Tigers broke the game wide open in the final two innings as they scored 10 runs on only 4 hits to make the final score 17 to 5.

Kraft, Meyer, Hurshman and Sander all pitched for Lexington, while Kolkmeyer, Jonny Hampton and Garrett Burec pitched for the Tigers, with Hampton getting the win. Trey Perez led Lexington with two hits, while Kraft, Meyer, Emerson, Huffman, Hurshman, Drew Bollmeyer and Abel Morris all had a hit, while Miller, Kolkmeyer, Kingston Lopez, Trey Simsheuser, and Blake Zykan each had 2 hits for the Tigers.
