Santa Fe softball has busy stretch
The Santa Fe Lady Chiefs played several games recently crafting their record to 2-5-1. The tie being in pool play action at the home tournament.
Santa Fe played Cole Camp on March 23rd. The Lady Bluebirds won this contest 12-7. Tatum Fitzwater pitched and sat down 13 batters in the contest. Hits came from Abigail Mueller with 3, four from sister Samantha, two from Chesney Warner, and one each from Fitzwater, Keastin Kitchen, Tynlee Koch, and Audrey Finkeldei. Fitzwater and Koch’s hits were triples.
Sweet Springs came a calling on March 24th, in this game nearly every out recorded by the Lady Greyhounds was a strikeout delivered by their pitcher Madison Arnold, who had 18. Fitzwater was also handing out seats as well, with 10 K’s. The Greyhounds out hit Santa Fe 11-7, but timely hitting and taking advantage of walks, led to a 11-0 win over the Red and Black. Hits for Santa Fe came from A. Mueller, S. Mueller, Kitchen, Jo-Hanna Breshears, Brooke Dierking, with one each, and Fitzwater with 2 hits. Breshaers hit was a triple.
Next it was tourney time, with Santa Fe hosting the Snowflake Classic. First up on Friday, March 27th was pool play and an eventual tie with Kingsville, 9-9 in 4 innings. Breshears pitched, striking out 5, allowing 3 walks, and 12 hits. Multi hit games came from A. and S. Mueller, (2), Dierking with 2, and Fitzwater with 3. Triples were included in Fitzwater and A. Mueller’s work, as was a home run from Fitzwater.
The Midway Lady Vikings were the next opponent on Friday, and Santa Fe was able to pick up the win 8-5. Fitzwater was in the circle, and passed out 7 K’s, 1 walk, and allowed 7 hits. S. Mueller, Fitzwater, and Breshears had two hits each. Other hits came from A. Mueller, and Dierking with one each.
On Saturday the ladies took on Windsor. Breshears was toeing the rubber again, dealing 4 K’s, 2 walks, and allowing 5 hits thru the 5 inning game. The Lady Greyhounds struck 1st in the opening frame, and added 2 more tallies in the 4th to take the win 3 to 2. At the plate, A. Mueller, and Dierking had two hits each, and S. Mueller, Fitzwater, Adalynn Boland, Breshears, and Kitchen all had a base knock each.
The final game of the weekend was against the Tipton Lady Cardinals. Tipton would jump out to a 10-0 lead after one inning of play, and cruise to an 11-4 victory. Santa Fe got tallies in the first three frames behind six hits from both Muellers, Dierking, Fitzwater, Boland, and Kitchen. Breshears and Fitzwater shared duties in the circle. Breshears worked .2 innings with 8 hits against, 10 earned runs, on 2 walks, and 2 K’s. Fitzwater had 10 K’s, 2 walks, and 1 earned run in 4.1 innings.
On Monday, March 30, Santa Fe hosted Orrick, delivering their own knock out punch early by denting home 9 times in the 1st inning. The Lady Chiefs exploded for 7 more runs in the 2nd in a three inning spread, 16-1 over the Lady Bearcats in I-70 Conference action. Breshears, and Gentry Ballenger saw action in this one. Breshears’ line included 2 innings, 2 hits allowed, no runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Ballenger saw 1 inning, allowing one run, 1 walk, no hits, and passing out 2 K’s. Hits for Santa Fe came from Warner, and Dierking with home runs, doubles from A. and S. Mueller, and Warner, and base knocks from most of the Santa Fe lineup.
Lincoln came to Alma for yet another home contest on 3-31, so far the schedule has been very gas friendly with this being the 9th of 10 home games in a row to open the season, (kudos to the athletic department for this scheduling). The Lady Chiefs grabbed a very early lead by a thin one, in the 2nd, then the Lady Cards answered with 2 in the 3rd, and got two extra inning scores in the 8th inning to hold off SFHS by the count of 6-4. Fitzwater pitched and delivered 13 K’s, walked 2, allowed 10 hits, and 6 earned runs. Extra base hits were delivered by Breshears and S. Mueller, additional hits came from Fitzwater, Boland, and Finkeldei.
The Lady Chiefs host Northwest (Hughesville), and travel for their first road game at St. Paul next.
