Minutemen give great effort in double OT District loss

It ended up being Heartbreak City, but the Lexington Minutemen Boys Basketball Team had absolutely nothing to hang their heads about, as they gave it everything that they had, and left it all on the floor, in falling in a double overtime thriller 54 to 52 to the number one seeded Higginsville Huskers in a District semifinal game last Thursday evening at Lone Jack High School.

Both teams played extremely tough defense throughout this game, as Lexington only got a 3 pointer and a free throw from Chael Lichte in the first quarter, but they held the Huskers to only 9 points, and trailed 9-4 at the end of the period.

In the second stanza, Lichte and Jimmy Patton each tallied 4 points, while Cash Cole had a basket, and Zach Melvin converted two free throws, but Higginsville got 7 points from Kadin Aversman and two 3s from Parson Stoner in the quarter, and they led the Minutemen 24-16 at halftime.

Lexington really stepped it up defensively in the third quarter, as they held Higginsville to only 7 points in the period, with Patton scoring 6 points, while Lichte added 5, Melvin nailed a basket and Blake Kaullen drained a free throw, and the Minutemen pulled to within one at 3130 when the buzzer sounded.

The game continued to be a dog fight, and very close, throughout the fourth period. Higginsville built what looked to be a solid 43-38 late in the period, but Melvin hit a clutch 3 to make it 43-41. Brock Page then hit one of two free throws, to extend the Husker lead to 3, but as the quarter was winding down, Lichte drained a huge 3 to tie it up at 44 all. Higginsville then turned the ball over, but the Minutemen could not get a good shot, and the game was headed to OT, still knotted up at 44-44.

In the first overtime period, Lexington won the tip, and Lichte then splashed home another 3 pointer, and the Minutemen led 47-44. Clay Aversman then drained two free throws for Higginsville to make it a one point game at 47-46. Cash Cole hit one of two free throws to extend Lexington’s lead to 48-46, but then Kadin Aversman scored inside for the Huskers, and the game was again tied at 48. The Minutemen then held the ball for a good while hoping to get the last shot, but they turned it over, and the game headed to a second overtime.

In the second OT, Cam Goodloe came off the bench and scored giving Lexington a 50-48 lead. Clay Aversman converted two free throws, and then scored around the basket, and the Huskers led 52-50. Cole and Kaullen each hit one of two free throws to tie it back up at 52, and then in the closing minute, Page drove inside, and banked in a short shot to give Higginsville a 54-52 lead, which proved to be the winner as Lexington could not get another good shot, and Higginsville won by 2 in double overtime Lichte led Lexington in scoring with 23 points, including 5 threes, while Melvin had 11 points, and Patton 10.
