Multiple closures scheduled on I-70, I-670

The Missouri Department of Transportation will close eastbound and westbound Interstate 70 between Routes AA/ BB (Exit 24 in Grain Valley) and Routes F/H (Exit 28 in Oak Grove) on Saturday, Feb. 14 at approximately 9 p.m., for the demolition of the Lefholz Rd. bridge over I-70 at mile marker 26. Access to the bridge will also close on Saturday, Feb. 14 at approximately 9 p.m.

Westbound I-70 is expected to reopen on Monday, Feb. 16 at approximately 7 a.m. and eastbound I-70 is expected to reopen on Monday, Feb. 16 at approximately 3 p.m. A signed detour for eastbound and westbound I-70 traffic will be in place and will utilize Route BB (Buckner Tarsney Rd.), Route FF (E Truman Rd.), and Route H. The Lefholz Rd. bridge will remain closed for reconstruction and is anticipated to be completed in July 2026.

Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa is the third project in Mo-DOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program and will add a third lane of travel in each direction to I-70 from just west of MO Route 7 in Blue Springs to approximately MO Route H. The project also includes interchange improvements at Route D in Bates City and at MO Route 131 in Odessa. The project was awarded in Spring 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.

*** The Missouri Department of Transportation will close Interstate 70 in Kansas City between 23rd St. and the U.S. Highway 40 and 31st St. intersection from Friday, Feb. 20 at approximately 8 p.m., until Monday, Feb. 23 at approximately 6 a.m. Crews will be demolishing the Cleveland Ave. bridge and the 27th St. bridge over I-70 as part of the Improve I-70 KC project. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area. A signed detour will be in place. All work is weather permitting.

Friday, Feb. 20: lane/ ramp closures ahead of the I-70 closure (all times are approximate)

• 9 a.m. – On-ramps close to I-70 at Jackson Ave., and Van Brunt Blvd.

• 12 p.m. – On-ramp closes from Indiana Ave. to I-70 eastbound

• 12 p.m. – On-ramp closes from US-40 to I-70 westbound

• 2 p.m. – On-ramp closes from 23rd St to I-70 eastbound

• 6 p.m. – Two left lanes close on I-70 westbound from Manchester Trfy. to US-40

• 8 p.m. – Two left lanes close on I-70 eastbound from Prospect Ave. to 23rd St.

Friday, Feb. 20 from approximately 8 p.m. until Monday, Feb. 23 at approximately 6 a.m.

• Full closure of I-70 eastbound and westbound between 23rd St. and the US-40/31st St. interchange.

Monday, Feb. 23 at approximately 6 a.m.

• All lanes & ramps open to traffic.

For more information on the Cleveland Ave. bridge replacement: Improve I-70 KC: Cleveland Ave. to CLOSE over I-70 for bridge replacement, Feb. 9 – Dec. 2026 | Missouri Department of Transportation The Improve I-70 KC project is a five-mile stretch of Interstate 70 between The Paseo Blvd. and US 40/31 St. in KC. This section of I-70 was built in the early 1960s and carries up to 120,000 vehicles per day.

The $237 million project will replace aging infrastructure, improve connectivity with heavy traffic congestion during rush hours and traffic incidents. This project includes the rehabilitation or replacement of 12 interchanges and 26 bridges. Construction began in spring 2025 with an anticipated project completion by December 2028.

*** The Missouri Department of Transportation will be conducting Girder Installation at the Holmes St. bridge over westbound and eastbound I-670 resulting in a full closure on WB I-670 between the U.S. Highway 71/I-670 interchange and the I-35/I-670 interchange. All work is weather permitting.

• Crews will CLOSE westbound I-670 starting at the I-70/I-670 split to the I-35/I-670 interchange.

• Crews will CLOSE the following ramps: -Southbound U.S. 71 to westbound I-670.
