SF boys battle Cougars, Tigers in conference action
The Santa Fe boys played in Cougar country on the 6th of February at Crest Ridge on Court Warming night. The Cougars are 18 and 6 and fresh off of a big win over Higginsville the game prior. The ball was tipped and in 23 seconds Ethan Finkeldei let one fly from the corner, splashing it home for a 3-0 Chiefs lead. The Cougars answered back soon and with the full court press they ran the score to a 12-3 advantage. Finkeldei hit down low for 12-5, CRHS added a free throw, and then freshman Brayden Livingston hit a corner three making it 13-8 at 3:30. Another three was delivered by Finkeldei at 1:22 however the Cougars stretched their lead to 26-11 after one. Finkeldei would pace the Chiefs with 11 in the contest, getting 8 in the 1st quarter.
Korben Dierking hit a three in the second quarter, Logan Wilsie got in on the scoring, and Livingston added another bucket but the Chiefs were held to 7 points in Q2.
After Crest Ridge crowned their King and Queen at halftime the 3rd quarter saw Dierking and Finkeldei both add threes, Wilsie get a score, and Hayden Toliver add a bucket, yet CRHS held the lead after three, 6128.
Dierking added another three ball from downtown, however a lone free throw by Toliver was the only other score in the 4th, as Crest Ridge took the victory 66-32 under the turbo clock. Scoring: Wilsie 4, Dierking 9, Finkeldei 11, Toliver 3, Livingston 5. Crest Ridge was led by Taylor with 15 and Shippy with 14.
The Chiefs next match up was against the Wellington Tigers also on the road on 2-10-26. Well-Nap jumped out to a 7-0 before Wyatt Doak got to the charity stripe and sank two freebies. Wilsie caught a pass and knocked one down from the free throw area as well for an 18-10 deficit after one.
The Chiefs drew to within 6 at the 3:45 mark in Q2 behind a nice pass to Finkeldei all alone in the lane after a steal on the Wellington side. Wilsie working off the motion offense drove in the lane for a spinner and a bucket at the 2:58 mark, then the Chiefs scored in transition with Finkeldei getting into the lane for a bucket to close to within 3 at 27-24 with 2:10 left. Halftime arrived with a score of 30 for WNHS, and 24 for Santa Fe.
Wilsie was at the stripe mid third quarter dropping in 2 free throws and then scoring again in transition for a 35-31, 4 point deficit. The Tigers would extend that lead closing out the quarter 44-36.
At the six minute mark in Q4, what looked to be a shooting foul was labeled on the floor, after a Tiger landed on a Chief down low on a pump fake. Off the inbounds though Jensen Rehkop dialed up a three for 4942. Soon, Toliver got an and one to fall, and Rehkop then drilled another three from deep for a 5348 tally with two to play. The Tigers scored four straight, then Dierking hit a corner there at 1:13, for 57-51, Wilsie scored with 25 seconds left but Wellington held on for the win, extending their lead down the stretch, 63-53. The loss dropped the record to 6 and 15 overall, and 2 and 7 in conference play. Scoring: Rehkop 9, Wilsie 12, Doak 3, Dierking 8, Finkeldei 15, Toliver 3. Mefferd led Wellington with 19.
