Middle school basketball girls play well at the end

The Lexington Middle School Girls basketball team had a good month of January, as they went 6-5 during the month, and they placed third in the MRVC East Middle School Conference Tournament that capped off the season.

On January 6, the Middle School Minutewomen faced Carrollton at home. Both teams had difficulty scoring in the first half, but Lexington led 10-8 at halftime. The Minutewomen got it going in the second half, and outscored Carrollton 36-12, and they pulled away for a 36 to 20 victory.

The next contest was at Knob Noster on the 9th of January, and this game was close throughout. Knob led 18-14 at halftime, and although Lexington outscored them in a low scoring second half, Knob pulled out a 25 to 23 win.

The Minutewomen had a road rematch with Carrollton on January 15, and they built a 19-10 halftime lead and won 31 to 18. On the next night, the Lexington Girls entertained Richmond, and they trailed the Lady Spartans 17-12 in a close first half. Richmond then outscored the Minutewomen 15-6 in the third period, and won 41 to 28. The Lexington Girls then played Holden at home for their third game in as many nights, and after leading by 3 points at halftime, they outscored the Lady Eagles 16-4 in the third quarter, and won 35 to 19.

On January 20, the Middle School Minutewomen traveled to Higginsville to play a very talented Lady Husker team, who was undefeated for the season. Higginsville dominated this one from the git go, as they built 26-4 lead at intermission, and won 44 to 17. On the next night, the Lexington Girls traveled to Knob Noster for a rematch with the Lady Panthers. As was the first game between these two teams, this game was very tight. The Minutewomen played a strong first half, and led 18-9 at halftime. Knob roared back in the third period, and cut Lexington’s lead to only 20-17, by the end of the quarter. As it turned out, this ended up being the second 2 point game between these two teams, but Lexington prevailed this time and earned a 27 to 25 road win. On January 23, the Minutewomen ventured to Holden for the final regular season game of the season. Holden led 14-9 at halftime, but then the Lexington Girls had a great third period, as they held the Lady Eagles scoreless for the quarter and led17-14, with one period left. However, Holden came back in the fourth quarter, and they defeated the Lexington Girls 24 to 22.

The season then wrapped up with the MRVC East Conference Tournament. In the first round of the tournament, the Minutewomen turned right around and played Holden again. This was the rubber game between the two, and the Lexington Girls took the series two games to one, as they picked up a first round win. In the semi finals of the tournament, the Minutewomen ran into Higginsville for the third time, and they fell again to the Lady Huskers, which placed the Lexington Girls in the third place game. This was another rubber game, as Lexington and Knob had earlier split a couple of two point games, but the Minutemen responded, and they beat the Lady Panthers, and earned the third place trophy in the Conference Tournament.

The Lexington Girls finished the season with a 6-11 overall record. In next week’s Lexington News, we will review the individual player statistics for the Middle School Girls from this past season.
