Highway Patrol reports two recent area accidents
On Thursday, March 19, an accident near Higginsville was fatal for a state of Georgia resident.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the accident occurred at 1:45 p.m. on I-70 at the 46 mile marker, near Higginsville Junction. Traffic on westbound I-70 was slowing for construction when a semi driven by a 43-year-old male of Georgia attempted to avoid another semi, driven by a 41-year-old male of Yorktown, Va. The Georgia semi struck the Virginia semi, causing the Virgina semi to roll into the path of another vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old male of Columbia. The Virgina semi also struck a third semi, driven by a 70-year-old male of Attalla, Ala. The Alabama semi was knocked into the barrier. The Georgia semi and the Columbia vehicle both travelled in to the median, and the Alabama semi overturned.
It is unknown if the Georgia man was wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced at the scene by Sgt. Cox with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department at 3:30 p.m. The Virginia man was wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Centerpoint Medical Center via Higginsville EMS. The Columbia man was also wearing a seatbelt. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Centerpoint Medical Center via Higginsville EMS. The Alabama man was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Centerpoint Medical Center via Sni Valley EMS.
The Georgia semi, a 2019 International tractor, the Virginia semi, a 2015 Freightliner tractor, and the Columbia vehicle, a 2015 Infiniti Q50, were all totaled and towed from the scene. The Alabama semi, a 2024 Freightliner tractor, received extensive damage and was also towed from the scene.

Peters, Cpl. B.S. Floray, Cpl. A.W. Whitehead, Cpl. D.W. Schubert, Cpl. M.J. Hanrahan, Cpl. S.J. Force, Cpl. B.M. Ryun, Tpr. J.A. Crewse, Tpr. B.S. Lautenschlager, Tpr. R.E. Tayloe, CVI C.R. Flynn, CVI M.P. Lamphier, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and the Higginsville Police Department.

On Sunday, March 15, a Lexington juvenile was injured in a one-vehicle accident in Saline County.
According to the crash report, the accident occurred at 10:54 p.m. on westbound I-70 at exit 78A, Marshall Junction. A semi driven by a 26-year-old male of Jamaica, N.Y., was traveling westbound when the driver observed an emergency vehicle. The driver swerved and the semi struck another westbound vehicle, driven by a 32-year-old male of Kansas City, Mo.
The New York man was wearing a seatbelt and had no injuries listed in the report. The Kansas City man was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Fitzgibbon Hospital via Saline County EMS. A passenger in the Kansas City vehicle, an 8-year-old female of Lexington, was also wearing a seatbelt. She sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Fitzgibbon via Saline County EMS.
The semi, a 2022 Freightliner, received minor damage and was driven from the scene. The Kansas City vehicle, a 2024 Buick, was totaled and towed from the scene.
The accident was investigated by Tpr. G.A. Stineman with assistance from the Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
