Huskers Take on Saints, Cardinals, and Trojans

Husker Baseball took on the St. Paul Saints on Friday, March 27th at home. The Saints dotted home plate 4 times in the first inning, adding three more runs in the next two innings, and put the Huskers away in the 4th going up 11-3, eventually taking the win 16-3.

Husker bats are starting to come around a bit however in this one it was a 2 hitter for the Saint’s pitching staff. SPHS pounded out 9 hits conversely. The Huskers further hurt themselves by being changed with 4 errors in the contest. Hits for the Blue and Gold came from Cael Wlkson and Breck Green. A trio of arms saw action for HHS, with Levi Kroessen, Dalton Johnson, and Brodie Rankin seeing mound time.

The Lawson Cardinals were next, who seem to be a big thorn in the Husker’s baseball side, having not lost to HHS since April of 2018. The Cards hold an 18-2 record against the Huskers in the last twenty games played, which might be the largest deficit against an annual or semi annual opponent in any sport in the Husker athletic program. This game however would be a very close one as it turns out, with Lawson squeaking by with a 10-8 win. 1st year head coach Graham Padley’s Huskers team battled in this one, despite going down 3-0 early, the Huskers snagged 5 runs in their half of the 4th inning, making it 8-7, down just a run, before the Cards tacked on a couple of insurance runs later to seal the victory. A good day at the plate was enjoyed by HHS as they added 7 hits, with Rylan Shockey getting a double, and Wilkson adding a triple.

Mound duties were taken by Green (3.2 innings, 8 hits, 8 earned runs, 6 walks, and 3 strikeouts),

and Joel Mahnken (3.1 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 0 walks, and 3 K’s).

Next up for the Huskers was a trip north and contest with the Carrollton Trojans. The Huskers enjoyed their best offensive effort of the season so far, denting home plate 8 times overall, and collecting 10 hits. Carrollton however, jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two innings, putting up a five spot in each frame. The Huskers posted crooked numbers in the 3rd, and again in the final two frames, but took the loss 18-8 in 6 innings.

CHS added 16 of their own hits in the game.

Toeing the rubber for the Huskers was Shockey who went 2.1 innings, allowing 6 hits, 10 earned runs, 5 walks, with no strikeouts. Next was Johnson, who went 3 innings, allowing 10 hits, 8 earned runs, also 5 walks, with one strikeout.

The Huskers will now play MRVCE opponents Holden, Knob Noster, and Lexington.
