Huskers Face Off Against Conference Foes in Baseball

Three games were played by LCC-1 last week, the first being against Lexington. The Minutemen were looking to snap a twelve game losing streak to the Baseball Huskers at Fairground Park on 4-21-26. Lexington had not defeated Higginsville since districts in May of 2019. In those twelve games, seven were by the spread rule (wins of ten runs or more).
The Huskers took the first meeting this season at LHS winning a close one 6 to 5, in comeback fashion. In the return contest the Huskers dotted home plate for a slim 1-0 lead after one, LHS answered in the second, then struck twice in the 4th, and 3 times in the 5th. Down 7-3 in the bottom of the final inning, the Huskers plated 2 more runs, yet Lexington held on for the 7-5 win.
On the mound was Breck Green going 4.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Next was Dalton Johnson, who tossed 2.2 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and striking out 2 batters.
At the plate Nick Catron delivered a double, going 1 for 1, while three players had multi-hit games: Owen Wood had a nice day, as he went 3 for 4, Levi Kroessen, went 2 for 3, and Cael Wilkson who went 2 for 4. Others adding hits were Joel Mahnken, John Wilkens, and Brice Maulis with one hit each.
The Oak Grove Panthers were next, with the Huskers hosting again. The Panthers wasted little time going up 2-0 after two, but exploded for 8 more runs in the 3rd. OGHS then added 4 more runs in the 5th after a 3 run Husker 4th. Oak Grove won 14-4. On the bump to start for HHS was Joel Mahnken, his line included 2.2 innings of work, allowing 9 hits, 9 earned runs, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout. Next was Cael Wilkson, going 2 innings with 3 hits allowed, 5 earned runs, and 3 walks. Brodie Rankin saw action as well, going 0.2, allowing 1 hit, and 2 walks. Hits for HHS came from Kroessen, Mahnken, Wood, Wilkson, Maulis, Jared Dieckmann, and Rylan Shockey all with one hit each. Johnson added two hits on the day.
The Carrollton Trojans were the final opponent of the week on 4-23-26 at Red Simmons Field in Fairground Park. The Trojans won the first meeting 18-8, but this game would be close all day. The game was scoreless until Carrollton tallied three scores in the 3rd inning, and added insurance runs in the 6th. HHS got on the board late, with 1 run in the final frame, as they dropped the game 5 to 1. Carrollton pitching held the Huskers in check for most of the day, with four Huskers connecting for hits, including Kroessen, Wood, Wilkson, and Maulis, with one hit each.
Toeing the rubber was Kroessen, going 6 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing 4 earned runs, with 1 walk, and 2 K’s. Johnson made an appearance also, going 1 inning, with 1 strikeout recorded.
