Minnie Mae to have her day

News Editor An unforgettable day is in store in downtown Lexington on Saturday as the legacy of a true trailblazer — Minnie Mae Talbott, the first elected female sheriff in U.S. history — is honored.
Minnie Mae Day will feature a variety of activities and events for all ages.
Events will include the River City Players’ presentation of a screenplay about Minnie’s life by Jamie Hoyt at 11:10 a.m. on the courthouse steps.
Other activities will inlude a “swearing in” of female deputies at 11:30 a.m.; the presentation of a Congressional proclamation to Lafayette County Sheriff Aaron Dye in recognition of Minnie Mae’s legacy; and a presentation of a street sign on Main Street at noon.
The “Jail and Bail” area will open at 12:05 p.m. at El Sabor and Papa Jacks, while Linn County Sheriff Carrie Melte will speak at 12:10 p.m. on the courthouse steps.
One of the highlights of the day — a Minnie Mae look-alike contest — will take place from 4-4:30 p.m. at the City Hall parking lot stage.
The finale concert featuring Erica McKenzie, Emma Jo and Wentworth alumnus Amanda Pruitt will be held from 5-10:30 p.m. at the City Hall parking lot stage.
