Second Sunday season kicks off

The 2026 Second Sunday season got off to a successful start on June 14 with the theme, “Art for the Ages.”

Nearly two dozen vendors lined 10th Street between Main and Franklin streets, offering fresh produce, meats, breads and baked goods, as well as a variety of handmade crafts. Food trucks served lunch and beverages, while visitors enjoyed classic tunes performed by Kerry Beach. Several downtown retail shops were also open, giving shoppers even more opportunities to explore Historic Lexington.

Those on the trolley tour learned about Lexington artists, past and present. Tom Beard portrayed Carl Stalling, the Lexington native who composed music for Disney and Merrie Melodies. Kelsea Randle portrayed classical pianist Allie Freeman Hancock, while Joann Ritter brought local sculptor Carey Boone Nelson to life. Jude Wells portrayed George Zeiler, who performed on riverboats with the Lafayette Silver Cornet Band. Local musician Cliff Payne rounded out the tour by sharing stories of Lexington garage bands from the 1960s and 1970s.

Lexington Arts Council offered a free craft activity for children and presented an exhibit of album art at The Lex. The display featured albums spanning the 1930s through the 1980s.

Several historic sites were also open for tours, including Lafayette County Courthouse, Lexington Museum, Wentworth Military Academy Museum, Christ Episcopal Church, and Battle of Lexington State Historic Site.

Second Sunday is a seasonal event series sponsored by the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce. Remaining dates and themes for 2026 are July 12, “Marvelous Mansions”; August 9, “Colorful Characters”; and September 13, “Battle of the Hemp Bales—Untold Stories.”

Visitors can reserve trolley tickets for the remaining events at historiclexington.com/second- sundays. The next event on July 12 will feature tours of Linwood Lawn and the Nitcher Home.
