Carroll County Memorial Hospital announces retirement of CEO Scott Thoreson

Carroll County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) announces the retirement of Chief Executive Officer Scott Thoreson, effective June 23, 2026, concluding five years of dedicated, forward-focused leadership that has strengthened the hospital and the community it serves.

Thoreson joined CCMH in July 2021, bringing more than 26 years of rural healthcare leadership experience with the Mayo Clinic Health System. Since his arrival, he has led the 25-bed critical access hospital and its more than 260 employees through a period marked by stability, growth, and national recognition for excellence in care.

“Scott exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and compassion,” said Tom Burkhart, CCMH Board of Directors president. “His focus has never been on personal recognition, but rather on building a strong, sustainable foundation for the future. Because of his leadership, CCMH is well-positioned to thrive for years to come.”

During his tenure, CCMH was named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital for four consecutive years and a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in the nation twice by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. In 2024, Thoreson was also recognized as one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s “Critical Access Hospital CEOs to Know,” placing him among a select group of leaders nationwide.

Thoreson consistently credits these honors to the dedication of CCMH staff and providers. “The real reason I’ve been recognized is the efforts and outcomes of our employees,” Thoreson said. “Their commitment to our patients each and every day is what makes this hospital exceptional.”

Known for his humble, servant leadership style, Thoreson prioritized long-term stability over short-term gains. He focused on strengthening systems, developing leadership within the organization, and fostering a culture grounded in compassion, accountability, and teamwork. Employees often describe him as approachable, steady and deeply committed to doing what is right for both patients and staff.

Reflecting on his time at CCMH, Thoreson shared, “It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Chief Executive Officer at Carroll County Memorial Hospital. I inherited a high-performing medical center, and I believe it has continued to flourish and become even better. We have made a difference in many lives, not only in Carroll County but in surrounding communities as well.”

Throughout his tenure, Thoreson also worked to strengthen community partnerships and ensure access to care close to home. Notably, he helped facilitate one of the first Community Health Needs Assessments conducted jointly with the Carroll County Health Department, creating a shared framework to address local health priorities and guide future improvements.

He frequently highlighted CCMH’s culture as a defining strength, describing it as a “family environment” where employees grow professionally while making meaningful contributions to patient care. He also emphasized workforce development, noting the hospital’s role in supporting and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

“Perhaps Scott’s greatest contribution is the legacy he leaves behind,” Burkhart said. “He has helped build a high-performing rural hospital with strong leadership, a clear mission, and a deep commitment to the people we serve.”

Thoreson and his wife, Gwen, plan to remain connected to Carrollton while enjoying retirement. They look forward to spending more time with family, including welcoming their first grandchildren later this year, traveling to visit loved ones, and pursuing outdoor activities such as biking and RV travel.

Thoreson expressed confidence in CCMH’s future under incoming CEO Blake Riley. “I leave CCMH in extremely capable hands,” he said. “The organization will continue its strong tradition of leadership and its commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of our community.”
