Minutemen have losing record but get some nice wins

The Lexington Minutemen Baseball Team got off to a good start, as they beat Polo 5-3 in their season opener, on a strong pitching performance from Trey Perez.

The Minutemen then had a 3-0 lead against Wellington, in their second contest but the Tigers took the lead in the fourth and never looked back, in pulling away for a 17-5 win. Perez had 2 hits for Lexington, while Alex Kraft, Hunter Meyer, Braxton Emerson, Isaac Huffman, Tristyn Hurshman, Drew Bollmeyer and Abel Morris each had a hit. Lexington then pounded out 19 runs in three innings, several days later, and beat Leeton 19-4, to move their record to 2-1.

Lexington hit the ball hard throughout their conference opener at Richmond and only had 3 strikeouts at the plate, but they could not get the key hit, as Richmond beat them 6-1. Kraft led Lexington with two hits, while Meyer, Huffman and Perez each had one. Perez pitched well for the Minutemen. The Minutemen battled Holden tough early on, in a second road conference game, but Holden then pulled away for a 13-6 win. Lexington then played well and led Van Horn of Independence 7-3 after 6 innings, only to see Van Horn, score 6 runs in the seventh and win 9-7. Emerson, Meyer, Morris, Kraft and Kale Sander each had a hit, while Perez pitched 6 strong innings.

The Minutemen then had a nice bounce back win over Concordia at home to move their record to 3-4, as they won 6-2. Kraft and Meyer shared the pitching duties, while Meyer and Sander each had two hits, with Perez banging a double. Lexington then led early, but fell 16-3 to Knob Noster on the road, as Johnathan Groves had two hits, while Bollmeyer, Hurshman, Huffman, Kraft and Sander each had one. In their next contest at home against Higginsville, Lexington led after 6 innings 4-3, but Higginsville scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead, and the Huskers held on to win 6-5. Kraft had two hits for the Minutemen, while Jesse Dunkle, Groves, Sander and Hurshman had one.

Lexington was shut out 11-0 at Carrollton, and then 10-0 four days later at Clinton, even though Perez had two hits, with Sander, Emerson, Morris, Meyer and Hurshman each getting one. Next came a rematch with Higginsville on the road. The Minutemen scored 3 runs early, and 3 more in the fifth to lead 6-1, and they went on to win,8-5. Perez was the winning pitcher, allowing only 2 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Bollmeyer, Morris and Groves each had 2 hits, with the three driving in a total of 7 runs. In their next game at Cameron, the Minutemen trailed 4-3 after six innings, but came back to tie it at 4-4 with a run in the top of the seventh. However, the Dragons scored in the bottom of the inning for a 5-4 walk off win. Emerson had two hits to pace Lexington, while Ayden Harned, Meyer, Sander, and Groves each had one.

In their next game against Richmond, Lexington led 5-3 after four innings, but then, the roof caved, as the Spartans scored 9 runs in the fifth, and pulled away for a 15-7 victory. Kraft had 4 hits to pace the Lexington offense, while Sander had 2, with Bollmeyer, Meyer, Huffman, Hurshman, and Emerson each collecting a hit. Then in their next home game against Holden, the visitors led 3–0 after three innings, and expanded it to 7-0 after four, and won 12-2. Harned had two hits, and drove in two for Lexington, while Meyer and Sander each cracked a double.in the game. Mason Eames tossed a no hitter for 6 2/3 innings, before Perez singled for Lexington’s only hit, as Knob Noster won 6-0 at Lexington. Perez pitched well for the Minutemen, allowing only one earned run on 4 hits through 6 innings. The next day, Oak Grove came to town and scored 6 runs in the first inning on their way to a 14-1 win. Harned, Groves, Kraft and Emerson each had a hit.

The Minutemen jumped out to a 3-1 lead on the road against Lathrop, but the Mules rallied to win 8-3. Emerson tripled for Lexington, while Sander and Kraft each had two hits, with, Meyer and Groves each collecting one. Next was a doubleheader in Marshall, against Carrollton and St Paul. Carrollton shut out Lexington, for the second time 10-0, as Kraft had the only 2 hits for the Minutemen, with Meyer and Bollmeyer each drawing a walk. However, Lexington played probably their best game of the season, in the second game, against a St Paul team, that was 11-3 coming into this game. The Minutemen led early, fell behind 4-3, but tied it at 4 apiece after 5. Each team scored once more, during the next two innings, and the game was even at 5-5 at the end of regulation. Lexington then put 4 runs on the board in the top of the eighth inning, which was plenty, as they pulled off a 9-6 upset. Perez had 3 hits in the game, while Kraft had 2, with Meyer, Dunkle and Morris each collecting one. Harned pitched 6 strong innings, while Huffman pitched the final 2 striking out the side in the eighth.

In a home game with Plattsburg, Perez pitched 5 scoreless innings before leaving, but the Tigers scored 6 runs in the final two innings to win 6-0. Harned had the only hit for the Minutemen in the contest. The next day was Senior Day, and Meyer rose to the occasion in his last home game against Crest Ridge, pitching a one hit complete game shutout, while striking out 13, as Lexington won 3-0. Kraft had 2 hits, while Meyer and Perez each had one. In their first District game at Carrollton against Brookfield, the Minutemen fell behind early and trailed 8-1 in the sixth inning. However a great defensive play sparked the team, as on a drive to deep center field, that looked like a grand slam home run for Brookfield, Lexington Center fielder River Howes reached over the fence and caught the ball, while crashing into the wall at top speed, and turned it into a double play. After that, the Minutemen collected four hits and scored 4 times in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Brookfield lead to 85. Lexington scored one more run in the seventh, and had the tying run at the plate, but Brookfield got the final out and won 8-6. Emerson had two hits for Lexington, while Dunkle, Perez, Hurshman, Meyer, Sander and Harned each had one hit.

The Minutemen lose Seniors; Drew Bollmeyer, Jesse Dunkle, Johnathan Groves, Hunter Meyer and Tray Perez. Alex Kraft was named to the MRVC East All Conference Second Team, while Hunter Meyer and Trey Perez received Honorable Mention.
