Gilbert Wayne “Gil” Rector

February 15, 1940 – October 8, 2026

Gilbert Wayne “Gil” Rector, 86, of Lexington, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home on October 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, teacher, coach, and public servant, Gil dedicated his life to his family, his students, his community, and the many people whose lives he touched. His legacy will be remembered through the countless lives he influenced, the traditions he created, and the community he loved so dearly. Gil was born on February 15, 1940, in Hermann, Missouri, to Gilbert “Boots” Roy Rector and Verna Alma (Carwile) Rector. He graduated from Higginsville High School in 1959 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Missouri State University. On May 7, 1961, he married the love of his life, Edith “Edie” Luehrs, in Sedalia, Missouri. Together, they built a life centered on family, commitment, hard work, and love.
A Legacy on the Football Field
For Gil, coaching was much more than a profession—it was a calling. He served as head football coach of the Minutemen for 31 seasons, compiling an outstanding record of 231 wins, 88 losses, and 4 ties. He also served as an assistant coach in track, wrestling, and basketball. Under his leadership, the Minutemen captured 10 MRVC championships and 13 district championships, along with state championships in 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1995. His teams earned an impressive 22–8 playoff record. In recognition of his success, Gil was named Missouri State Football Coach of the Year in 1976, 1980, and 1984. He also received the National High School Coaches Association Regional Award and was named KMZU Dream Team Coach of the Year three times. Gil received the MSHSAA Distinguished Service Award and was named Lexington School District Teacher of the Year in 1994. In 1998, the high school stadium was named Gil Rector Stadium in his honor. His accomplishments were further recognized through inductions into the Missouri Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Missouri State Sports Hall of Fame, the Higginsville High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Greater Kansas City Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Minuteman Athletic Hall of Fame. He also received the Paul Martel Outstanding Service Award. While the championships, records, and awards were remarkable, Gil’s greatest achievement was the impact he had on his players and students. He taught discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and the importance of giving your best. To generations of Minutemen, he was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a role model, and someone who believed in them.
A Public Servant at Heart
From 2001 to 2016, Gil served four terms and 16 years as Lafayette County Northern Commissioner, dedicating himself to the people and county he loved. As noted in the Lafayette County Commission record on his final day in office, “There is no better way to describe Commissioner Rector than as a public servant.” During his service, he helped advance the Mental Health Board and Lafayette County Children’s Services Fund, supported the Veterans Memorial, helped bring about the county-built bridge on Old Highway 40 near Odessa, and supported the sales tax initiative that funded the new Justice Center and renovation of Old City Hall, now Lafayette Hall. Gil served with humility, dedication, and a genuine desire to make Lafayette County a better place, leaving a lasting legacy of service that will not soon be forgotten.

A Life of Family, Friends, and Tradition
Beyond coaching and public service, Gil treasured time with family and friends. One of his favorite places was his farm in Hale, Missouri, where he enjoyed nature, fishing, hunting, sharing stories, and making memories with loved ones. Easter scavenger hunts and Fourth of July fireworks were special traditions that brought generations together and reflected what mattered most to Gil: family, friendship, and laughter. Gil was a member of the Lexington Elks Lodge, Missouri Retired Teachers Association, and Quail Unlimited. Whether on the football field, serving Lafayette County, spending time at the farm, or gathering with loved ones, Gil brought dedication, generosity, and a deep love for the people around him.

One Final Game for Coach Rector
For 31 seasons, Coach Rector led his team onto the field, teaching his players to work hard, stand together, and never give up. Throughout his life, he carried those same lessons into his family, his community, and his service to others. Now, after a life filled with victories, friendships, service, and love, Gil has played his final game. His legacy will endure in the stadium that bears his name, the community he helped strengthen, the family traditions he created, and the hearts of all who knew him.
