Lexington boys win Consolation at Crest Ridge

The Lexington Boys Basketball Team fell short of repeating as tournament Champions, but they won two games, and won the Consolation bracket at the Crest Ridge Cougar Classic this past week.

Lexington Boys vs Knob Noster The Knob Noster Boys Basketball Team got it rolling right off the bat, as they had a big first quarter, and then held off the Lexington Minutemen in picking up a 69 to 64 first round win in the F and C Bank Cougar Classic Basketball Tournament a week ago Tuesday at Crest Ridge High School.

The Lexington Boys scored 16 first quarter points but they could not stop Knob, and they trailed 24-16 at the end of the period. The Minutemen had a run but could not close the gap by the end of the second stanza, and they went into the locker room down 38-29. Both teams tallied 14 points in period three, and the Panthers maintained their 9 point cushion heading into the fourth. The Lexington Boys had a strong fourth quarter scoring 21 points, and closing the gap, but they could not quite get over the hump, and they fell 69 to 64. Zach Melvin led Lexington with 19 points, while Jimmy Patton had 15 and Chael Lichte 14. Keshawn Callaway and Andrew Collier led Knob with 16 and 14 points respectively.

The Minutemen got three more triples in the second quarter, with one each from Lichte, Cash Cole and Drew Bollmeyer, and they scored 19 more points and led 45-16 at intermission. The Lexington Boys kept the pedal to the metal to start the second half with a 22 point third quarter, and they led 67-23 at the end of the period.

Quite a few different Lexington players saw playing time in the second half, as Lexington came away with a 72 to 30 win. The Minutemen had twelve 3s in the game, but what was even more impressive was the fact that the Lexington defense allowed 7 points or less in three of the four quarters of the contest. Lichte led Lexington in scoring with 31 points, while Cole was also in double figures with 12. Layson Widenmann led Sherwood with 10 points.

Lexington Boys vs Holden The Minutemen jumped out quickly again in this game, as they were clicking on all cylinders early, and they built an 181 lead, and led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter. However, Holden was not about to throw in the towel, and they scored 16 second period points and cut Lexington’s lead to 31-22 at halftime. Things stayed about the same in the third period, as the Minutemen had what seemed to be a comfortable lead at 45-34 after three.

The Holden Boys then played a very strong fourth period, as they got back to within 3 points, and had their chances to take the lead. However, the Lexington Boys never gave up the lead, and they made some shots and played good defense when the game was on the line, and they held on for a 57 to 54 win to take the Consolation trophy.

Chael Lichte led Lexington in scoring with 17 points, while Zach Melvin and Cash Cole were right behind with 16 apiece. Brody Bockover led Holden with 18 points, while Destry Powell had 13, and Kolby Hill had 10. With the win the Minutemen are 10-7 and will play Carrollton at home on Friday.
