Lexington girls wrestlers compete well at state

The three Lexington Minutewomen Wrestlers, who qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament, all made a good showing at the State meet last Wednesday and Thursday at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

There are only two classes for Girls Wrestling in Missouri, so there are many schools with much larger enrollments than Lexington in Class 1, which makes the competition extremely stiff.

Elizabeth (Izzy) Hager placed fourth in the 135 lb weight class, which marked the second straight year of her placing, as she placed sixth last year. Izzy advanced to the semi-finals for the second straight year by winning her first two matches, and she then lost 2-0 to Rylie Ingrassia of Harrisonville, who was the eventual State Champion. She then won a thrilling sudden victory overtime match, with a takedown for the only points of the match, over Sophia Smith of Mid Buch, which qualified her for the third place match. Izzy then lost to third place finisher Anjelika Alarcon of McDonald County and finished fourth.

Mireya Gonzalez won two matches and lost two in the 125 lb weight class, and came within one win of placing. After beating America Barcenas of St Charles West, Mireya lost in the quarterfinals to Alana Henry of Principia, who finished second. She then bounced back and defeated Libby Deutsch-Terry of Hillsboro, but then, after building a sizeable lead in her next match, she was pinned by Brook Hoag of Nevada, who placed sixth, after the elbow pad Mireya was wearing, apparently stuck to the mat some, making it more difficult to escape.

Lainie Schumacher dropped her first two matches in the 235 weight class, but she had an extremely tough draw. She lost in her first match to Alexus Johns of Mexico, who placed fifth in the State Tournament last year, but had to later bow out of this year’s tournament due to a Medical Forfeit. In her second match, Lainie again faced another strong competitor, as she fell to Brooklyn Baczek of Springfield Hillcrest who placed third this year.
