City officials seeking aid for replacement of fire hydrants

News Editor During last week’s Lexington City Council meeting, Mayor Tom Hughes said officials are seeking federal funding to replace a number of fire hydrants around the city.

Hughes said he has been in touch with the offices of Congressmen Emanuel Cleaver and Mark Alford, along with State Rep. Terry Thompson, to push for the funding.

Hughes said the city is budgeting funds to replace five or six hydrants next fiscal year, but added the city has 29 hydrants that need to be either replaced or repaired. New hydrants cost between $8,000 and $10,000.

“It’s kind of pricey, but it’s a very necessary cost for the safety of our residents,” said Hughes.
