MRVCE Conference Crown Clinched by The Huskers
The Huskers enjoyed success on the hardwood last week at home in a three game stint. First up on 2-9 was a second meeting with KC Hogan Prep Academy. The teams met earlier in December at the Husker Classic with the Huskers winning that one by a lopsided count of 75-20 over the Rams. The Blue and Gold would cruise to victory again in this contest posting a turbo clock victory of 63-31. Seniors Brock Page and Kadin Aversman led the Husker offense each with a baker’s dozen, and Freshman Parson Stoner had 12. Full Scoring: Fisher 8, Todd 6, C. Aversman 5, Stoner 12, Johnson 2, K. Aversman 13, Page 13, Burns 4. Wells had 11 for HPA to lead the Rams.
Two important conference games were next with a rematch with Lexington up first on 2-10. A month prior Lexington hung close with the Huskers most of the game but the ‘Ville held on for a 52-43 spread.
Fisher scored first, however Lexington snagged an early lead of 5-2. Stoner erased that lead with a trey, and Burns got a put back, and then got an and one. K. Aversman scored 4 straight for 14-9. The Huskers then led 18-11 after one.
LHS hit a three early 2nd quarter, but the Huskers controlled most of the frame leading at halftime, 32-24.
Page to Fisher to C. Aversman produced a Q3 score, then K. Aversman hit again for 38-24 with the Huskers starting to pull away. Then an oddity of sorts scoring wise occurred with just over 2 minutes to play in the third, a ball went off a cutting Husker’s noggin (caused by a partially de flected pass) and went in!
(That’s using your head!).
The quarter ended with the Huskers leading comfortably 48-34.
Dos Aversmans and Stoner scored 6 straight down the stretch to finish off the Minutemen 65-45. Scoring: Fisher 4, Todd 1, C. Aversman 18, Stoner 15, K. Aversman 16, Page 5, Burns 6.
The third game of the week was a rematch with Carrollton. The Trojans seem to match up well with HHS, and their previous encounter was an overtime game across the river. The Huskers survived that one snagging a 71-66 win.
This game would be close as well most of the game. Fisher got the scoring started again 1 minute in, then Page made it 4-0. At the 3:09 mark K. Aversman scored making it 8-6 and then Stoner hit from downtown for 11-8, but the Trojans showed their tenacity snagging a lead after one, 12-11 CHS up.
In the second quarter K. Aversman made it 16-15, HHS still down, yet a three by Stoner and another score by K. Aversman had the Blue and Gold leading 2018 at the half.
After the third quarter the Huskers were leading 37-33, and in Q4 Carrollton closed to within two at 7:05, 37-35. Page got an assist to Burns for a bucket down low, and a four point advantage, then Burns scored again on a follow for 41-35. The Huskers missed two free throws and then settled in to salt the game away from the stripe down the stretch, making eight straight. Any last hope for the Trojans was extinguished by a hustle play from Fisher to tie up a ball at the end giving the Huskers the possession on the arrow for a 49-43 victory and MRVCE champions. The Aversman cousins led the squad in scoring, both with 12. Final scoring: Fisher 4, C. Aversman 12, Stoner 11, K. Aversman 12, Page 4, Burns 6. Jackson Davis had 13 to pace Carrollton.
