Husker Basketball Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play, Falls to Crest Ridge

The Husker boys had three games last week including two conference match ups. The first game of the week was with an old rival, the Richmond Spartans.

The Huskers had defeated RHS back in December in the Husker Classic and were looking to keep their lead a top of the MRVCE.

Richmond won the tip and went in for an easy lay up but Zayden Fisher swatted the ball away. Parson Stoner opened the Husker scoring with two free throw makes, and later Kadin Aversman zipped a pass to Brock Page for a bucket and score of 4-2. Fisher got a layup, Stoner struck, then Fisher again for 10-2 Huskers. Stoner hit a three ball, and RHS wisely took a timeout to chat things over at the 2:41 mark. Richmond got a bit of offense going yet Q1 ended 16-8 Huskers.

Burns, Fisher, Clay Aversman, and Burns again made it 24-8 to start Q2. K. Aversman made it 30-10 with an athletic catch and finish at the rack, and Quarterback Page threw a touchdown pass that scored for 38-8 at the half.

The Husker Jayhawk offense and sets were too much in the third as the lead built to 49-20, add in another TD pass from Page to Fisher for the finish, as HHS was cruising 49-20. Stoner finished the frame with a tres and score of 5831 as the buzzer ended the quarter after the shot.

Six unanswered points in the middle of Q4 helped the cause as the Huskers won on this night 74-47, with sophomore Rhett Burns getting the last Husker bucket of the night.

After a C Team win3230, and a JV win 51-23, it was time for the Huskers to play at Crest Ridge in a new series on 2-5-26. The Cougars are a good team and won the early season I70 conference over St. Paul, a team that beat the Huskers earlier in January. Notably, both teams would be led by freshman in scoring in this contest, with Stoner having 22 on the night, and Crest Ridge’s Wyatt Brant posting 23 points.

The Huskers led 3-2 off a three ball from Page but CRHS would go up quickly 7-3. Stoner got a steal and score, and then hit a three soon after for 8-7 HHS. Stoner added another deep score, and then a layup and it was 13-9 Huskers after Q1.

C. Aversman drove baseline and finished early in the 2nd quarter, then hit a corner three, Stoner hit his third tres, and halftime ended up 25-24 Huskers.

Fisher, C. Aversman, scored and Stoner added two more from downtown and Q3 wound up 37-34.

Still within striking range the Cougars were not content to go away yet. CRHS used a twenty point 4th quarter to catch and pass the Huskers, and capitalized on a couple Husker turnovers to snag the victory 54-46.

The last game of the week against Knob Noster came after a Court and Mat Royalty Crowning before the contest. King Brock Page was anointed as King, and Ada Stephens was crowned as the Court and Mat Queen.

The first tip off was a jump ball so Clay Aversman who was involved in the tie up tipped off for it again on a re-jump. King Page, K. Aversman got scores, and later Fisher knocked down a three for 13-10. Stoner hit a three at 1:28 and Q1 ended with the tally of 18-16 Huskers.

C. Aversman hit a three, then made a nifty move to the basket and scored and HHS was up 25-16 in Q2. The frame ended 34-28 with the Blue and Gold leading the Panthers.

In the third the Panthers had ramped up the defense trying to stay in it, after a Knob three pointer Fisher hit Burns with a dime, and the frame ended 47-36 HHS leading.

The final quarter of the week saw Fisher get a steal and layup, K. Aversman go coast to coast for a score, the Fisher drop another dime to Burns for a bucket. The Huskers were hitting on all cylinders with the interior passing game all night. Later Caden Todd joined the assist gang and found a wide open C. Aversman. Knob hit a three to close to 61-52, but HHS weathered any Panther comeback attempt to garner a 62-55 victory, the Husker’s 13th win in a row over Knob Noster. The win brought the record to 16 and 5 overall, 6 and 0 in the MRVCE.
