Veteran Organizations Offer Unique Souvenir
In recognition of the semiquincentenniel of the United States of America, Higginsville’s veteran organizations, the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 6270 and the American Legion Post 223 are proud to offer a unique souvenir of this momentous occasion.
These commemorative challenge coins were produced by these organizations and are being sold to the public to give everyone an opportunity to own a piece of history. Many people remember the keepsakes and mementos produced in 1976 to honor the bicentennial, this is no different, just marking a different milestone in the history of our proud country.
The proceeds for this fundraising go right back in to supporting the community through a variety of programs each organization provides. Academic Scholarships as well as Missouri Boys and Girls States programs Post 223 awards and sponsors each year, to the VFW’s annual “Patriot’s Pen” and “Voice of Democracy” contests for students in middle and high school where awards are given locally, at the state level and at the national level (including the grand prize of a $35,000 scholarship!)
For those of you who aren’t familiar with challenge coins, a bit of history… Challenge coins trace their roots back to World War I when a wealthy lieutenant commissioned bronze medallions for his squadron to serve as mementos of their service. The lieutenant’s medallions were intended to foster unit pride and camaraderie among squadron members. After the war, the practice of carrying these coins spread throughout the military, becoming a symbol of membership and loyalty.
During the Vietnam War, the concept of ‘challenging’ others to produce their coins became popular, especially among Special Forces units. This practice reinforced unit cohesion and accountability. Today, challenge coins are prevalent across all branches of the U.S. military, symbolizing achievements, membership, and recognition. Challenge coins represent more than just a token; they embody pride, loyalty, and a sense of belonging, especially within military and veteran communities.
Coins are available until they’re sold out from members of each organization, as well as at Target Time Defense and Restocks!, 1913 and 1915 Main Street, Higginsville. Perhaps the final opportunity to get your piece of history will be at this year’s Independence Day celebration on July 3rd. There will be a canopied space to the side of the entertainment gazebo where the organizations will be selling coins and handing out commemorative flags for the children.
