Baseball nearing post season

On May 5, Santa Fe/Norborne took on Wellington- Napoleon in baseball. The Tigers of WN would go on to secure an 11-4 victory in a rainswept affair played on the carpet in Marshall. Despite rain all day, the two squads (plus the softball teams) completed their games when most other venues were a no-go.

This game also served as Senior Night for Santa Fe spring sports.

For SFHS, runs were scarce through three innings, with just one on the board. But a run in the 5th and two in the 7th helped the cause despite the opponent’s holding the upper hand in this one.

Korben Dierking had a double, and Jensen Rehkop (the starting pitcher) a base knock in the third, Tyson Davis had a two bagger in the 6th, and Dalton Doak had a triple in the final frame.

Northwestern of Mendon, with Brunswick, and Keytesville (a mouthful) were next on the plate, and at 15 and 2 on the season they would provide quite a challenge looming. Despite the records, Santa Fe battled all game long. Ultimately, Northwestern would secure a hard fought 5-0 win.

A throw in game was also added on May 12 at Higginsville. Facing the one-win Huskers, Santa Fe jumped out to a 5-0 lead after about 15 minutes of play in the game, soliciting a pitching change from the Huskers. The Huskers held Santa Fe in check after that, and later tied the game forcing extra innings. It didn’t take long though before the Chiefs tallied three go ahead runs in the 8th, and held on for an 8-5 win on the road, pushing their record to 4 and 13 overall, the most wins since 2023. More on the Northwestern and Higginsville games to come later.

The Chiefs will play K.C. Barstow on Thursday, May 14, in Districts.
