Lexington woman sentenced to life in prison after guilty verdict
Lafayette County Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Hillbrener has announced that Amber Smoot, 29, of Lexington, was found guilty by a Lafayette County jury of Statutory Sodomy in the First Degree on July 8, 2026. On Sept. 8, 2026, the defendant was sentenced to life in the Department of Corrections.
REVISED: I-70 WB to CLOSE overnight in Odessa for bridge demolition, Sept. 16-17
Crews will be conducting multiple traffic modifications in Odessa beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 16 for the demolition of the Johnson Drive bridge over Interstate 70. This work was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 15, but was rescheduled due to weather.

M3 records win #118 in Wisconsin
Fifty-seven cars and stars rolled into the pits for the third annual Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Hill Shootout. Twenty-two of the fire breathing 410 winged sprint cars checked in to do battle around the third mile clay oval in picturesque Door County, Wis. They were joined by 12 of the Wisconsin Wingless Sprint cars and 23 of the Millie’s Pub and Grub Unified Dirt Street Stocks.
Lafayette County Resource Fair is set for Sept. 15
Lafayette County Enterprises, Inc. (LCE) is the Sheltered Workshop that employs 45 adult individuals with disabilities living in Lafayette County. They perform piece work, kitting, have the only recycling center in Lafayette County, are the janitorial contractors for the Rest Area at Concordia and the truck parking lot at Odessa, and operate the thrift store located on-site called Undiscovered Treasures.
Santa Fe FFA named 2 Star Chapter for 2026 National Chapter Award
The Santa Fe FFA Chapter of Alma has been recognized in 2026 National Chapter Award Program from the National FFA Organization. They were given a 2-star ranking. Truly a mark of their exceptionalism, less than 10% of chapters nationwide are given a ranking from the National FFA Organization.

On Sept. 9, American Medical Administrators, Inc. (“AMA”) announced the completion of the transition of Fitzgibbon Hospital and related healthcare operations to new ownership and management following approval of the transaction by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

In the month of August, the Shepherd’s Food Pantry served 359 families, which included 465 adults, 279 children and 322 seniors, for a total of 1,062 precious people who needed a hand up in this hot summer.
