Husker Baseball Captures First Win of the Season

The Husker baseball team secured the first win of the season last week at rival Lexington on 4-13, and the first win for head Coach Graham Padley who took over a young and inexperienced team this season. It wasn’t easy, but the Blue and Gold found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Things looked good early as the Huskers were humming along, holding the Minutemen scoreless through three innings, and leading 1-0. In the 4th however Lexington plated two runs, and took a 3-1 lead into the 6th. With the Minutemen leading, HHS scratched together a 3 run 7th inning, and held on to ultimately win 6-5.
The Huskers out hit Lexington 10-6, while Husker pitching did their job keeping the game close and minimizing damage when things looked rocky. Kroessen’s line saw 6 innings pitched, 5 hits allowed, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts. In relief, Dalton Johnson went one inning, with 1 hit, 1 earned run, and 1 walk given.
Hitting wise freshman Owen Wood hit a triple and was 2 for 3, Kroessen was 3 for 3, freshman Joel Mahnken went 2 for 3, Rylan Shockey had a hit, as did Brice Maulis, and John Wilkens.
Severe weather threats postponed the Huskers hosting Wellington, yet the next game was a long road trip south down to Warsaw on 4-16. This one would be all Wildcats as the Huskers were unable to find momentum, dropping the contest 14-0 in 5 innings.
Shockey went 2 innings giving up 7 earned runs with 7 hits allowed, 3 walks, and a strikeout, and Dalton Johnson threw 2 innings giving up 5 earned, 3 hits, on 2 walks and a k.
Bats were quiet in this one for HHS, Cael Wilkson and Mahnken provided a hit each but that was it for the Huskers.
