Semiquincentennial Celebration July 3rd

America’s 250th anniversary—the Semiquincentennial—will be celebrated on July 4, 2026, marking 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Higginsville will honor this historic milestone on July 3, providing residents and visitors with additional opportunities to participate in celebrations throughout the surrounding communities over the holiday weekend. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy an entire weekend dedicated to celebrating our nation’s heritage and freedom.

The Higginsville Chamber of Commerce is honored to produce this beloved annual event. Celebrations of this magnitude do not simply happen on their own—they require collaboration, commitment, and strong community partnerships. Higginsville is a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community works together.

A key component of our success is Higginsville’s “4-Plex Unity” partnership, which brings together the City of Higginsville, Higginsville Chamber of Commerce, Lafayette County C-1 School District, and Higginsville Parks & Recreation. Through this collaborative approach, community events continue to thrive and succeed. Beyond the 4-Plex Unity partnership, numerous organizations, businesses, volunteers, and individuals contribute their time, talents, and resources to make Higginsville’s Family Fun & Fireworks Festivities the premier place to celebrate America.

Planning begins each January with a formal request to the Higginsville Board of Aldermen seeking approval to produce the event. This request outlines logistical needs involving several city departments, including Streets (road closures and traffic control devices), Utilities (electrical support), Police (crowd and traffic management), and EMS services. Once city approval is received, requests are submitted to Higginsville Parks & Recreation for use of Fairground Park and to Lafayette County C-1 School District for permission to launch the fireworks display from the west lawn of the school campus.

After all approvals are secured, the Higginsville Lions Club is contacted. We are extremely fortunate that the club continues to maintain the necessary ATF licensing required to set up and discharge fireworks. Fun Fact….our local Lion’s Club has provided this service for over thirty years! Without their commitment and expertise, hosting a community fireworks display would be significantly more challenging and costly. Together, we determine a fireworks budget that reflects the support we anticipate from our generous business community and individual donors. Due to federal regulations, the fireworks must be purchased by a municipality. The Chamber works closely with Higginsville’s City Administrator to coordinate the purchase. Donations received by the Chamber are used to reimburse the City for those expenses.

The next phase involves securing entertainment and sound services. Over the years, we have been fortunate to host outstanding performers who help create a memorable experience for attendees. We also coordinate youth activities for the event, both of which are proudly sponsored by the Higginsville Rotary Club. This year, we are excited to introduce a new attraction—a Foam Party sponsored by SMICO. Participants are encouraged to bring a towel and prepare for a fun-filled experience. Portable toilets are secured as well as event liability insurance.

Food concessions are another important part of the festivities. This year’s lineup includes the Higginsville Fire Protection District, Walton Concessions, Craig Concessions, Hannah Banana’s, Davis Kettle Corn, and the Ice Cream Truck.

As the event approaches, fundraising efforts intensify. This year, $12,500 has been committed toward the fireworks display. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals continue to demonstrate remarkable generosity by contributing the funds necessary to make the show possible. Our annual “Boot Block” (4-Way Stop on Main Street) fundraiser also plays a vital role in helping us reach our fundraising goals.

When celebration day finally arrives, the Higginsville Lions Club dedicates countless hours to preparing the fireworks display. Volunteers install sponsorship banners, concession vendors set up, and entertainers and sound technicians arrive to prepare for the evening’s activities.

At 5:50 p.m., the ceremony officially begins as American Legion Post 223, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6270, and Boy Scout Troop 415 present the Colors. The National Anthem will be performed by Kristen Hillbrenner, setting the stage for an evening of patriotic celebration. 6:00 p.m. Entertainment by Adam Wyatt. 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. – Foam Party and Inflatables 7:00 p.m. – dusk. Entertainment by LONGSHOT. Fireworks at approximately 9:30 p.m.

This year, we wish to pay special tribute to veterans, active military and their families. We have a designated area just west of the stage area where our honorees will have a very visible view of the fireworks. If you’d like to be included, please park in the High School parking lot. VFW and American Legion will provide transportation to the area if needed.

Families and friends gather with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the festivities. Nearly 2,000 people are expected within the walking track area alone, while many more gather on surrounding lawns and throughout the community. The evening culminates with the spectacular “Grand Finale,” proudly sponsored by Green Hills Communications. As the fireworks conclude, the Higginsville Police Department begins the important task of ensuring the safe and orderly departure of attendees.
