Honor Walk Project gaining steam
News Editor The Lafayette County Military Honor Walk Project got a nice boost last Thursday when a news crew from Channel 41-Kansas City visited Lexington to interview project committee members for a story.
The project seeks to create a “walk” honoring local military heroes ultimately stretching from the corner of 10th and Main to the corner of 10th and Franklin.
Organizers say the purpose of the project is to memorialize and honor significant contributions made by military personnel from Lafayette County. The proposed project will add new memorials to the existing Lafayette County Veterans Memorial on 10th Street.
Phase 1 of the project will also provide space for additional names to be added to the Veterans Memorial.
The project is currently in its fundraising stage; all funding for the project is coming from private contributions.
“We are selling brick spaces for the new walls and reaching out to county businesses to seek donations,” said Friends of the Lafayette County Veterans Memorial board member Allan Lee.
Lee said he’s been pleased so far with the overall response from the public toward the project.
However, Lee remarked that organizers are hoping to spur sales of the brick spaces.
“We have sold about 60 of 200 spaces so far,” commented Lee.
Meanwhile, Lee said the group is actively seeking a title sponsor business or individual to help fund the project sooner.
“We hope to finish by Memorial Day 2027,” added Lee.
