Celebrate Safely This Fourth of July
As Independence Day approaches, many families will gather to enjoy cookouts, parades, and fireworks. While fireworks are a long-standing Fourth of July tradition, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Taking a few simple precautions can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday.
The National Safety Council recommends that fireworks be used only by responsible adults and that children never be allowed to handle or ignite them. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire.
Fireworks should only be used outdoors in a clear, open area away from homes, dry grass, vehicles, and other flammable materials. Never attempt to relight a malfunctioning firework. Instead, wait several minutes and then soak it thoroughly with water before disposing of it.
Sparklers, often considered safe for children, can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and can cause serious burns. Parents should closely supervise children around all fireworks, including sparklers.
Pet owners are also encouraged to keep animals indoors during fireworks displays, as the loud noises can cause stress and anxiety.
Before celebrating, residents should check local ordinances regarding fireworks and be considerate of neighbors, veterans, and others who may be sensitive to loud noises.
By following a few common-sense safety tips, everyone can enjoy a fun and memorable Independence Day while helping keep the community safe.
