Group seeks to help city’s feral, stray cats

Operation Snip ’Em is currently working towards raising $5,000 to help Lexington’s feral and stray cat population. Funds raised will help with vet care, vaccinations and spay and neutering operations. They have already taken in over 30 cats and kittens from Lexington who needed immediate attention and vet care.
The City of Richmond worked diligently last year with TNR (Trap Neuter Return) and their efforts were successful. A big factor for their success was because they had very minimal litters of kittens. The goal is to do the same in Lexington. The goal is to get the cat population under control and have minimal litters of kittens next year. The group has already seen many health issues from serious eye infections to broken legs with the cats they have rescued. An unspayed indoor/outdoor cat can have up to five litters in a single year, with 4 to 10 kittens per litter. That equates to potentially 40+ kittens a year.
The group will continue to do different fundraisers and activities to try to raise the 5k all year long. Change collection buckets have been placed at various businesses to collect money as well. There are also two bins for cat food donations, as they are feeding thirty plus kittens from Lexington currently. One food bin is located at Water’s Hardware (South Business Highway 13) and the other is at City Hall (Franklin Avenue). There will also be a bake sale on Saturday, August 15th, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brothers Market in Lexington.
Donations can be made: by mail, P.O. Box 103, Richmond, MO, 64085 or by Venmo, under @SNIP ’EM. Questions or for more information, please call Jennifer Coen at 660-2324190.
