Huskers Win All MR VC East Sports Title!
LCC-l, who has won this title more than any other MRVCE school, took top honors once again for 2025-2026, in the challenge that combines all conference sports, assigning points for each finish in the respective conference races. Congratulations Lafayette County C-l Huskers!

Dead Week Brings Rest and Relief to Athletes, Families, and Coaches, Before the Grind
The MSHSAA Dead Week took place last week, which is an important week for everyone involved in High School athletics. It creates a week where families can get together, go on vacation, or stay at home, and recharge their batteries before the major grind of fall (and winter, and spring) sports activities take center place.
NFHS and MSHSHH Rnnounce Uolleyball Changes and Proposals
I communicated with Husker Volleyball Coach Kinsey Harms who relayed some rules info from the National Federation of High Schools recently announcing some rule changes for this season. MSHSAA has adopted a few of them and will possibly adopt more next year. One major change would be the ability for teams to use two liberos at the same time, however it is understood that at press time MSHSAA has not adopted that rule as yet, though we might see it in 2027. (The libero is a back-row defensive specialist and can substitute freely for any player in the back row without counting against regular team substitutions. The libero wears a different color uniform so they can be easily identifiable). Here are some other key rule changes listed on the MSHSAA website that look to be in play this fall: A team may designate up to two liberos, but only one libero can be in the game at a time. When a team designates two liberos and one is injured/ill, a new libero may be re-designated. When a team designates two liberos and one is disqualified; the team must continue with one libero. Rationale: Allows more student-athletes to participate by creating an additional opportunity for coaches without having to utilize a substitution.
Park Department Summer Sizzles with Events
I would like to recognize and commend a few organizations who all held remarkable events in the park this summer. In doing so I would like to point out the remarkable job that was done by the park maintenance staff as well.
Summer Camp and Games Highlight Local Soccer Rctiuitg
FC Higginsville ran its 3rd annual Summer Soccer Clinic and had its largest turnout ever with over 40 kids participating in the camp. To put into context, in the first year 16 kids had participated, and last summer 23 players came out. FC Higginsville Technical Director Steve Bartosik added, “It's really something to watch how this thing continues to grow at all levels. Creating opportunities for youth, building new relationships, and connecting with people...It's one of the coolest things I have ever been a part of in my life.”
Tennis Courts Receive Much Needed Resurfacing Project
For the first time in several years, the Fairground Park Tennis Courts have been refurbished with the help from a major grant from the United States Tennis Association, along with $3,000.00 from the Kansas City area USTA chapter these grants total around $35,000.00. Additional help with funding is available by splitting the cost with Lafayette County C-1, a memorial of $10,000.00 from the Frances Fitzgerel family, and donations from community partners such as the Higginsville Rotary Club ($5,000.00), Higginsville Lions Club ($2,000.00), and a couple more private donations as well.
